BDC’s Canadian Innovation Award for Productivity Improvement

100 per cent Newfoundland owned and operated, the
D.F. Barnes Group of Companies focuses on
manufacturing, fabricating and repair services in the
marine, shipbuilding, offshore oil and gas and industrial
sectors. Productivity and efficiency has been at the
forefront of Orphan Industries’, a member of the DF Barnes Group, business strategy. Orphan undertook a one-year pilot project examining the production of their Launch and Recovery System (LARS) – a system used for sub-sea service and repair.
Through lean and continuous improvement, Orphan Industries now boasts a reduction in labour hours for their LARS unit by 35-40 per cent.
Their new approach has created a new company vision, focusing on marketplace opportunities and investing in personnel and equipment, as well as quality and safety systems. Because of their increased efficiency based on LEAN’s 5th rule - pursuit of excellence and continuous
improvement - Orphan Industries Ltd. is the winner of BDC’s Canadian Innovation Award for Productivity Improvement for 2007.
