Manufacturing

Manufacturing in this Province dates back to the 1500’s, when
fish, seal, and whale oils were processed to tan leather and light
the lamps of Europe. Today, manufacturing, valued at more than
$2.1 billion, is one of the fastest growing sectors of the
Newfoundland economy thanks to new companies and strong
consumer support for homegrown products. Most of the products
are based on resource based industries, such as fishing and
forestry. Metal fabrication and refining of crude oil also contribute significantly.

The manufacturing industry directly accounted for:

  • 6.6 per cent  of provincial GDP in 2005 (latest available data)
  • 7.3 per cent of total employment in 2006.

The lead agency in support of manufacturers in the province is the provincial chapter of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME),
Canada’s largest trade and industry association.
