Energy
The discovery of offshore oil and gas reserves in 1979 started a
new era that greatly expanded the marine resources of the
province. Today, with three reservoirs in production, Newfoundland
and Labrador produces more than half of Canada's conventional
light crude oil.
In 2007 the Hibernia facility produced 66 million barrels, the
Terra Nova facility produced 17.6 million barrels, and White Rose
produced 29.3 million barrels, with a total value of $8.2 billion,
reflecting historically high oil prices.

Energy Hub
St. John's is the hub for east coast oil exploration, development, and production. The offshore energy industry injects more than $770 million dollars into the local economy each year. The city was elected to the World Energy Cities Partnership.
Future opportunities include:
- Ongoing exploration in Orphan Basin and Laurentian Sub-basin
- Developing technologies to bring vast natural gas resources to shore
In 2007, guided by a long-term Energy Plan to manage energy resources, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador created Nalcor Energy, a new provincial energy corporation. Nalcor Energy has five lines of business: Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, Churchill Falls, Lower Churchill Project, Oil and Gas and Bull Arm Fabrication.
